The Brookfield Junior Elks have as of late been following the old saying “it’s not how you start, but how you finish.” The team spent the first two months lingering around .500, but November was not as kind. The Elks went 2-6 on the month to drop to last place in the Fred Fox division. With A rough start to December our guys had to make a choice: lay down on the mat and let the count run on or get up, dig in, and start swinging. And swing they have. December 11 started a three game winning streak to put themselves right back in the fold. This included a convincing 6-3 win against the second place overall Sackville Blazers, their second win against Sackville this season in fact. The Elks have only 2 losses since mid December and they’ve both come at the hands of league runaways Valley Maple Leafs.
The Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League has kept par with the Maritime Junior Hockey League and added a two game mini-series between the 4th and 5th place teams in the Fred Fox Division. That means the Elks only have to move up one place to make the playoffs. In another twist, the league has introduced a 3 point win system. Instead of the team’s remaining 8 games only being worth 16 points, there are now 24 total points sitting on the table, and that makes things very interesting. The team holding the 5th place position right now is the Cole Harbour Colts, and at 10 points back the Elks are within striking distance. Brookfield has an added advantage as well with three games at hand on the Colts, who have just 5 games left. With only 10 points to make up, that’s 9 points the Elks can pick up that the Colts can not, so every point matters to them.
As it happens, these two teams will meet this Tuesday, January 19th at Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex in what amounts to a keystone game in the race for the NSJHL playoffs. Brookfield can close to within 7 points and take back control of their own playoff destiny. Two days later the Elks host a special Thursday make up game against Antigonish. For both nights warm up is at 7:00, puck drop at 7:30.
