The Dartmouth Steele Subaru Major Midgets start their playoff semi-final tonight, hosting the Halifax McDonalds.
The teams finished 2-3 on the league table, but Dartmouth had 19 more points on the strength of all-rookie line Evan MacKinnon, Andrew Coxhead, and Luke Henman. MacKinnon and Coxhead were 7th (43pts) and 8th(42pts) in league scoring. Henman chipped in with 36 points of his own.
Halifax head coach Tim Boyce has no illusions about the challenge his team faces.
“Coxhead, MacKinnon, and Hedman were the best line in the league”, Boyce told me here at Tough Call. “We’re not expected to win this series, so we’re just going to go out and play hard and see where the chips fall at the end of the series.”
Boyce and the Macs are not strangers to coming through with their backs to the wall. Just last year they came back from a 3-1 series deficit in the semis to defeat the Valley Wildcats. They eventually fell in the finals to Dartmouth in 4 games, with three of them decided by one goal.
Dartmouth is hoping to take the next step in defending its title as the series begins tonight. Game time is 7:15 at the Dartmouth Sportsplex.
