The Dartmouth Steele Subaru Major Midgets will host game 2 of the Eastlink Major Midget Hockey League Finals Saturday night. Puck drop is at 7:15 at the Dartmouth Sportsplex. They defeated Dartmouth side rivals Cole Harbour Wolf Pack 5-1 in the opener Thursday night at Cole Harbour Place.
The Wolf Pack finished atop the regular season table with 64 points, and Dartmouth was just one point behind, and it’s no wonder they are the last two standing.
These two teams boast a remarkable 11 of the top 13 league playoff scoring leaders, and all 11 players have a point per game average of better than 1.0.
Brock McLeod of the Dartmouth Steele Subaru club leads the way with 16 points in just 8 games, followed closely by rookie teammates Evan MacKinnon and Andrew Coxhead, with 15 and 14 points respectively.
Cole Harbour features playoff goal scoring leader Andrew Martell. While he’s tied with McLeod and Coxhead at 7 goals each, Martell has one game less, meaning he has an incredible goal per game average heading into the finals, although Dartmouth held him pointless in game 1.
With all this firepower on both sides, it’s hard to imagine the goalies maintaining their stats to this point.
Dartmouth’s first year tender Aidan Hosein has a sparkling 1.36 GAA and an unthinkable 95% save percentage in the playoffs.
These finals definitely showcase the best midget players in the province, and possibly the country.
